- Bulging in the middle of the run. Hydrostatic pressure is winning. This is the most urgent sign.
- Wall tipping forward at the top. Rotation — the base or the batter is inadequate, or there is no geogrid.
- Stair-step cracking in mortared or block walls. Differential settlement below the wall.
- Blocks separating vertically — the wall is being pushed apart, not just leaned.
- Soil or mulch washing out over the top. Overtopping means surface water is not being diverted.
- Standing water or a soggy strip behind the wall. The drain tile is clogged or was never installed.
- No weep holes and no visible drain outlet. If you cannot find where water exits, water is not exiting.
