Dormant seeding in late fall actually works well in Minnesota — the seed sits, stratifies, and germinates first thing in spring.
The drainage spec that matters
Nine out of ten failed walls in this state failed for one reason: water had nowhere to go. A wall built correctly includes:
- Compacted aggregate base, 6–12 inches deep, buried below grade
- First course buried — roughly 10% of wall height
- Clean 3/4" drainage stone at least 12 inches deep behind the entire wall face
- Perforated drain tile at the base, sloped to daylight
- Geotextile fabric separating drainage stone from backfill soil
- Geogrid reinforcement layered into the backfill on walls over about 4 feet
- Compaction in lifts, not one dumped backfill
- Surface grading that moves water away from the top of the wall
If a bid does not name drain tile, clean stone, and geogrid, it is a wall with an expiration date.
