Siding is the biggest single exterior surface on your house and the decision you live with for 25 to 50 years. In Minnesota, the deciding factors are cold impact resistance, hail, and how the material handles water at the bottom edge.

The Minnesota-specific problems
Vinyl gets brittle in the cold. Below about 40°F, vinyl loses impact resistance. A stray hockey puck, a snowblower-thrown chunk of ice, or hail in a March storm cracks it. In July it expands and can oil-can (wave) if it was nailed too tight. It is still the value champion, and modern thick vinyl is far better than the 1990s product — just know the tradeoff.
LP SmartSide swells at the bottom edge if the cut ends were not sealed and the bottom course sits too close to grade or a roof. This is the single most common LP failure in the metro and it is entirely an installation issue. Require sealed cut ends and proper ground clearance.
Fiber cement is heavy and can crack in extreme cold if handled roughly. It is also the most durable of the paint-required options, and Hardie makes a specific product line for cold, wet climates — make sure that is what you are being quoted.
Steel wins on durability and is very common in hail-prone areas for a reason. Its weakness is denting: a solid impact leaves a permanent dimple. Modern textured finishes hide this reasonably well.

Vinyl still wins on pure cost. The others win on appearance, durability, and what a buyer sees at resale.
Insulated vinyl — is it worth it?
Insulated vinyl adds contoured foam backing behind the panel. It adds roughly R-2 to R-3, which is modest in energy terms, but it does three useful things: it makes the panel far more rigid and impact resistant (addressing vinyl's biggest weakness), it eliminates the hollow sound, and it lays flatter with less oil-canning.
If you are going vinyl in Minnesota, the insulated upgrade is usually worth the money — less for the R-value than for the durability.
What actually matters more than the material
Housewrap and flashing. Siding is a rain screen, not a waterproof layer — water gets behind all of it. What keeps your walls dry is the weather-resistive barrier, properly lapped, with flashing at every window, door, and penetration, and a drainage path out at the bottom.

A cheap material installed correctly outperforms a premium material installed badly, every time. When comparing bids, ask what housewrap, how windows get flashed, and whether the crew is employed or subcontracted.
Hail and insurance
The Twin Cities gets serious hail. If a storm damages your siding, document it immediately and file within your policy window — many policies have a one- or two-year limit. Insurance that covers a siding replacement effectively lets you upgrade material for the difference in cost, which is the cheapest path to steel or fiber cement most people ever get.
