Stump Grinding Cost in Minnesota
Most Twin Cities stump grinding jobs run $100 to $450 per stump. Massive oak stumps and root-flare grinding can reach $600–$900. Per-inch pricing in MN averages $3–$5 per inch of diameter, with a $150 minimum trip charge.
Quick price table
| Stump diameter | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 12 in | $100 – $175 | Often a minimum-charge call |
| 12–24 in | $175 – $350 | Most yard trees |
| 24–36 in | $300 – $500 | Mature shade trees |
| 36 in+ | $450 – $900 | Old oaks, cottonwoods |
| Multiple stumps (same visit) | $50–$100 each after first | Big savings |
| Surface roots / flare grinding | +$100 – $300 | If you're replanting |
What drives the price
1. Diameter at ground level
Measured at the widest point of the root flare, not the cut top. A "12-inch stump" with a 22-inch flare gets billed at 22 inches.
2. Depth
Standard grind is 4–6 inches below grade — enough to plant grass. For replanting a tree in the same spot, you need 12–18 inches, which doubles the time.
3. Wood type
Hardwoods (oak, elm, hickory) take 40–60% longer than softwoods (pine, willow, poplar). Same-size stumps, very different prices.
4. Access
A self-propelled grinder needs a 36-inch gate. Tighter access means a smaller (slower) grinder or hand-portable equipment — add 20–30%.
5. Hidden hazards
Rocks, fence posts, old chain-link buried in the trunk, irrigation lines, invisible-fence wire — all dull or break grinder teeth. Expect a $50–$200 surcharge if the operator hits surprises.
Grind vs. remove vs. leave
- Grind — most common. Stump turns into a pile of mulch chips, hole is filled and topped.
- Full extraction (excavator) — $400–$1,500+ extra. Only needed if you're pouring a foundation, slab, or pool.
- Leave it — fine for back corners; expect mushrooms, decay, and termite/carpenter ant attraction within 3–5 years.
What's included
A fair MN stump grinding quote includes:
- Grinding to 4–6 inches below grade (specify if you need deeper)
- Surface root grinding within 2 feet of the stump
- Backfilling the hole with grindings
- Cleanup of debris from driveway/lawn
- Optional: haul-off of grindings ($50–$150 add-on)
- Optional: topsoil + grass seed ($75–$200 add-on)
After the grind: what to do with the hole
The grindings make poor planting medium (high carbon, low nitrogen — they steal nitrogen from new plants as they decompose). Best practice:
- Haul off the grindings (or pile them as mulch elsewhere).
- Backfill with topsoil mixed with a bit of compost.
- Seed or sod — give it 1 full growing season before planting anything woody in the same spot.
If you're replanting a tree, plant at least 3 feet away from the old stump location — old roots compete with new ones for years.
Saving money
- Bundle stumps — most grinder-on-trailer trip fees are $100–$150. Adding stumps 2–5 to the same visit is much cheaper than separate trips.
- Coordinate with tree removal — getting both done same-day saves the trip charge entirely.
- Skip haul-off — pile grindings in a back corner; they decompose in a year.
- Winter pricing — frozen ground = harder grinding = some companies charge more, others less. Ask.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a grinder myself? Yes — Home Depot rents 13-hp grinders for ~$150/day. Realistic for one small stump if you have experience. Not realistic for anything over 18 inches, and the rental usually costs more than hiring out for one stump.
Will it kill my lawn? The grinder rides on the lawn but standard machines don't tear it up. Some compaction near the stump is normal.
How long does it take? A 20-inch stump: 30–60 minutes. A 36-inch oak: 2–4 hours.
Do you mark utilities? Yes — we call Gopher State One Call (811) before any grinding. This is required by Minnesota law and free. Allow 48 business hours.
