That sunken slab at your garage door, the sidewalk section that has become a trip hazard, the patio now sloping toward the house — in Minnesota these are almost universal, and most of them do not need to be replaced.

How it works
Small ports are drilled through the slab. Material is pumped underneath under pressure until the slab lifts back to grade. The ports get patched. That is the whole process, and most jobs take two to four hours.

Use poly foam when the soil beneath is already weak (the added weight of slurry can cause new settling), when you need the driveway back the same hour, when the void is thin, or in a basement where moisture matters.
Use mudjacking on thick slabs over decent base where cost matters more than speed. It is the value option and has been working for decades.
Why slabs sink in Minnesota
Understanding this decides whether the repair lasts:
- Poorly compacted backfill. The most common cause. Trenches for utilities and the backfill against a new foundation settle for years after construction. That is why the garage apron — sitting on backfill — is almost always the first thing to drop.
- Water erosion. A downspout dumping at the slab edge washes base material out from under it, a shovelful at a time.
- Frost heave cycles. Repeated lifting and dropping gradually opens voids.
- Clay soil shrink-swell. Twin Cities clay expands when wet and contracts when dry.
- Tree root decay. Roots removed or rotted leave voids behind.
If you lift a slab without fixing the water that undermined it, you will be lifting it again in a few years. Extend the downspout six feet, correct the grade, and check the drain tile. That is often a $200 fix that protects a $1,200 repair.
When replacement is the honest answer
Leveling a broken slab just gives you a level pile of broken concrete. Replace when:
- The slab is fractured into multiple pieces that move independently
- The surface is spalling, pitting, or crumbling (usually salt damage)
- The concrete is under about 3 inches thick or has no reinforcement left
- There is severe alligator cracking
- The slab has heaved up rather than settled — that is frost, and lifting does not apply
- The grade or layout needs to change anyway
A good contractor tells you this instead of taking the leveling money.
Season
Polyurethane foam can be installed in colder conditions, extending the window. Mudjacking needs unfrozen ground, so it is effectively an April-to-November service in Minnesota. If you have a trip hazard in December, foam is the option.
Will the holes show?
Yes, somewhat. They get patched with color-matched mortar, and they are visible up close — noticeably so on decorative or stamped concrete. They are far less visible than a replacement slab poured next to 20-year-old concrete, which never matches.
How long does it last?
Typically 5 to 10 years, and frequently permanently — as long as the underlying cause was corrected. Ongoing water erosion is the thing that brings it back. Fix the water and most lifts simply do not move again.
