Stump Grinding FAQ — What Twin Cities Homeowners Ask Most
How deep do you grind?
Standard 4–6 inches below grade — enough to plant grass. For replanting a tree in the same spot, 12–18 inches.
Do I have to remove the grindings?
No — most homeowners use them as backfill in the hole. They're carbon-rich mulch and decompose over 1–2 years.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Wait at least one growing season and plant 3+ feet away. Old roots compete with new ones for years and the grindings tie up nitrogen.
Will grinding damage my lawn?
Grinder rides on the lawn but standard machines don't tear it up. Some compaction near the stump. We backfill divots with topsoil if requested ($75–$150 add-on).
How long does it take?
20-inch stump: 30–60 minutes. 36-inch oak: 2–4 hours.
Do you call utilities?
Yes — Gopher State One Call (811), 48 business hours before. Required by MN law. Free.
Can I burn the stump instead?
Possible but slow (weeks of smoldering), risks underground fires through root systems, and most Twin Cities cities prohibit open burning in residential areas.
What if there are surface roots?
We can grind 1–2 ft outward from the stump for surface roots. Beyond that, full root removal requires excavation ($400–$1,500+).
Will grinding kill my surrounding plants?
No — only the stump and nearby roots are removed.
Can you grind stumps in winter?
Yes. Frozen ground actually grinds cleanly. Pricing similar to summer.
How big a gate do you need?
Most self-propelled grinders need a 36-inch gate. Tighter access = smaller (slower, costlier) machine.
What about stumps near foundations?
We can grind within ~6 inches of foundations safely. Closer than that risks vibration on the wall — we'd recommend hand-cutting the visible portion and leaving the rest.
