Wood vs. Vinyl Fence in Minnesota — Which Lasts Longer?

Both can last 25+ years in Minnesota. They get there very differently.

Where wood wins

  • Lower upfront cost — 30–40% cheaper.
  • Authentic look — cedar is genuinely beautiful for the first 5–8 years.
  • Easy repair — swap one rotted picket for $4.
  • Customizable — stain any color you like.
  • Disposal — fully biodegradable when you replace it.

Where vinyl wins

  • Maintenance — wash with a hose once a year, that's it.
  • Lifespan — quality vinyl outlasts cedar by 10–20 years.
  • Color stability — modern vinyl holds white/tan for 15+ years.
  • No insect damage — termites and carpenter ants don't touch it.
  • No staining cycle — cedar needs $1,500+ in stain over 20 years.

MN-specific gotchas

Wood

  • Cedar #2 grade warps and twists badly within 5 years. Demand #1 grade in writing.
  • Pressure-treated southern pine is cheap but rots in MN's freeze-thaw within 8–12 years.
  • Posts matter more than pickets. Use cedar or PT 4x4 set in concrete, 42" deep.
  • Stain in year 2 and every 3–4 years thereafter. Skip a cycle and you'll be replacing pickets in year 10.

Vinyl

  • Wall thickness matters. Cheap import vinyl (under 0.120") yellows and cracks in 8–10 winters.
  • Cold brittleness — vinyl is more impact-fragile in -20°F. A snowblower bump cracks panels that wood would just dent.
  • Repair availability — match panels are hard to source 10+ years out. Stick with major brands (CertainTeed, Bufftech, ActiveYards).

Vinyl wins long-term for most homeowners. Wood wins if you actually enjoy yard work and the look.
