Where metal actually wins in Minnesota

Metal sheds snow — sometimes in one 400-pound slab, onto your entry, your car, your deck railing, or your shrubs. Any metal roof over a door, walkway, driveway, or lower roof section needs snow guards or a snow rail. Budget $8–$20 per linear foot. If a bid does not mention them, the contractor has not thought about your house.

What to check in a metal roof bid

• Gauge. 24-gauge is the standard for a main house. 26- and 29-gauge oil-can and dent more.
• Panel attachment. Clips that allow thermal movement, not face screws through the panel.
• Substrate and underlayment. High-temp synthetic underlayment plus full ice and water shield at eaves and valleys.
• Finish warranty. Kynar 500 / PVDF finishes hold color; cheaper SMP finishes chalk and fade in 15–20 years.
• Snow retention plan in writing.

Is a metal roof loud in rain? Not over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic. The "loud metal roof" reputation comes from barns with open framing.

Will a metal roof stop ice dams? It reduces them substantially by shedding snow, but ice dams are caused by heat escaping into the attic. Fix insulation and ventilation regardless of roof material.

Do metal roofs attract lightning? No. Metal roofing does not increase strike risk, and if struck, it is non-combustible — which is safer than asphalt.
