Most Minnesota roofs are engineered for a ground snow load in the 42-50 psf range depending on county, with the roof design load derived from that. The problem is not fresh snow — it is what the snow becomes.
Weight, not depth
- Fresh light snow: roughly 3 lbs per sq ft per foot of depth
- Packed or settled snow: 12-20 lbs per sq ft per foot
- Ice: about 57 lbs per sq ft per foot
Two feet of fluff is minor. Two feet that thawed, refroze, and got rained on can be four times the weight. A midwinter rain-on-snow event is the classic Minnesota overload scenario.
Roofs most at risk
- Low-slope and flat roofs, including porch and addition roofs
- Wide-span structures: garages, pole barns, sheds
- Areas below a taller roof where sliding snow drifts and piles
- Valleys and any spot where two roof planes dump into one
- Older structures with prior water damage or altered framing
Warning signs
- Doors or windows in interior walls that suddenly stick
- New cracks in drywall, especially above door frames
- A sagging or bowing ceiling line
- Creaking or popping sounds under load
- A visible dip in the ridge or roof plane
- Sprinkler heads or light fixtures that have dropped slightly
If you see two or more, leave the building and call for an assessment.
Clearing it correctly
- Use a roof rake from the ground. Pull the first 3-4 feet up from the eave — that relieves both load and ice dam formation.
- Never use a metal shovel, an ice pick, or a hammer on shingles. Cold asphalt shatters.
- Leave an inch or two of snow rather than scraping down to the shingle.
- Never use salt or calcium chloride directly on the roof; it corrodes flashing and kills the plantings below.
- Do not climb a snowy roof. This is the leading cause of winter roof injuries in Minnesota, and it is not worth it.

Balanced attic insulation and ventilation keeps the roof deck cold, which means snow stays snow instead of melting and refreezing into a load-bearing slab of ice at the eave. That single upgrade addresses snow load, ice dams, and heating cost at the same time.
