Attic insulation in Minnesota
The attic is where most Twin Cities homes lose their heat, and it is the cheapest place to get it back. Houses built before 2000 usually have R-19 to R-38 up there. Current Minnesota energy code calls for R-49, and R-60 is what we recommend for real winter comfort.
Air sealing comes first — always
Insulation slows heat conduction. It does not stop air movement. If you blow insulation over an unsealed attic floor, warm moist air keeps rising through every gap, carrying heat with it and dumping moisture into the insulation. That is how you get frost on the underside of the roof deck in February and drips in March.
So we seal first:
- Top plates of interior and exterior walls
- Plumbing and wiring penetrations, chases, and soffited ceilings
- Recessed can lights (IC-rated covers where needed)
- Bath fan and range hood housings — and we make sure they duct outside, not into the attic
- The attic access hatch or pull-down stair, which is usually a giant uninsulated hole
Then insulation
- Blown fiberglass or cellulose to R-49 to R-60 (roughly 16 to 22 inches depending on material)
- Baffles at every rafter bay so soffit vents stay open and airflow continues
- Dam and insulated cover around the attic hatch
- Knee wall and slope insulation in story-and-a-half homes — the hardest and most valuable part of any Minneapolis or St. Paul bungalow

FAQ
How much insulation should a Minnesota attic have?
Code minimum is R-49. We recommend R-60, which is roughly 18 to 22 inches of blown material depending on whether it is fiberglass or cellulose.
Do I need to remove the old insulation?
Usually not — new blown insulation goes right over the top. Removal is needed if it is wet, moldy, rodent-contaminated, or vermiculite.
Cellulose or fiberglass?
Cellulose is denser, resists air movement better, and is made from recycled material. Fiberglass does not settle and is unattractive to pests. Both work well at the right depth; installation quality matters more than the choice.
Will this stop my ice dams?
Air sealing plus insulation plus working soffit ventilation is the actual fix for ice dams. Insulation alone, without sealing the air leaks, often disappoints.
