Stamped and decorative concrete
Decorative concrete gives you the look of stone or brick at a lower cost than pavers, in one continuous surface with no joints to weed. It is a great product with one honest Minnesota caveat, covered below.

The Minnesota caveat
Concrete cracks. In a climate with 40-plus freeze-thaw cycles, a rigid slab will crack somewhere — that is physics, not workmanship. What we control is where and how much:
- Air-entrained mix at 6 to 7% air — mandatory here, this is what lets the concrete survive freeze-thaw
- 4,000+ psi mix for exterior slabs
- Control joints cut within 24 hours at proper spacing so cracking happens in the joint
- Fiber mesh or rebar to hold any crack tight
- Proper base and drainage, same as a paver job
- Cure and seal, then reseal every 2 to 3 years
Even done right, expect hairline cracking at joints over time. If a completely crack-free surface matters to you, pavers are the correct choice — that is the tradeoff.

Salt warning
Do not use rock salt on decorative concrete, especially in the first winter. Chlorides attack the surface paste and cause scaling that no sealer fully reverses. Sand for traction, or use a chloride-free deicer.

FAQ
Will stamped concrete crack in Minnesota?
Some hairline cracking over time is expected in this climate. Proper air entrainment, a 4,000 psi mix, correct control joint spacing, and a good base keep it minimal and keep it in the joints.
How often does stamped concrete need resealing?
Every two to three years in Minnesota. The sealer is what preserves the color and protects the surface from moisture and deicers.
Stamped concrete or pavers?
Stamped costs roughly 30 to 40 percent less and has no joints to weed. Pavers will not crack and can be repaired invisibly. In freeze-thaw country, pavers are the more durable choice; stamped is the better value.
Can you resurface my existing patio?
Yes, with an overlay, provided the existing slab is structurally sound. If the slab is heaved or badly cracked, an overlay will just crack along the same lines.
