Garage insulation and finishing
An uninsulated Minnesota garage sits near outdoor temperature all winter, which means a cold floor over the room above it, a cold wall against the house, and a space you cannot use from November to April. Insulating and finishing it is one of the cheapest ways to add usable space to a house.

The overhead door problem
You can insulate every wall to R-21 and still have a cold garage, because a standard uninsulated steel overhead door is about R-2 and takes up an entire wall. An insulated door (R-12 to R-18) plus new perimeter weatherstripping and a good bottom seal usually makes more difference than anything else in the room.

What it costs to heat one
A well-insulated, air-sealed two-car garage held at 50°F through a Twin Cities winter generally runs somewhere in the range of $25 to $60 a month with a mini-split. Uninsulated, the same target is effectively unreachable — you are heating the outdoors.
Code note
The wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the house is a required fire separation: minimum 1/2 inch drywall, and 5/8 inch Type X where there is living space above. We build that correctly, and it is inspected.

FAQ
Is it worth insulating an attached garage?
Yes, especially if there is living space above or beside it. Beyond making the garage usable, it stops that cold mass from pulling heat out of the adjacent rooms.
Do I need to insulate the garage door?
If you want the room warm, yes. An uninsulated door is roughly R-2 and typically the single largest heat loss surface in the space.
Can I heat a garage with a space heater?
An electric space heater will not keep an insulated two-car garage warm in a Minnesota January and is expensive to run. A mini-split or a gas unit heater is the practical answer.
Does the garage need a vapor barrier?
In our climate zone, yes — a vapor retarder on the warm side of the insulation. Getting it wrong traps moisture in the wall, so it is worth doing properly.
