Cedar and treated pine privacy, picket, and board-on-board fences, set on posts deep enough to survive frost heave. Most of the wood fence failures we get called to replace are not rot — they are posts that were not set below the frost line and pushed themselves out of the ground over three winters.

How we build it

• Posts below frost depth — 42 inches or more in the metro, set in concrete with a drainage base
• 4x4 or 6x6 posts, 2x4 rails, cedar or treated pickets
• Gates hung on heavy hardware with diagonal bracing so they do not sag
• Utility locate before any digging, and a check of your city's height and setback rules

Grade changes, rock, tear-out of an old fence, and gate count move the number.

Care

Cedar left bare weathers to gray and lasts; sealed every few years it holds color. We stain new fences after they have dried out, usually the following season.
