Wood Fence Installation

Cedar privacy, picket, and split-rail wood fences.

Wood fences built for Minnesota weather

Cedar and treated pine privacy, picket, and board-on-board fences, set on posts deep enough to survive frost heave. Most of the wood fence failures we get called to replace are not rot — they are posts that were not set below the frost line and pushed themselves out of the ground over three winters.

How we build it

  • Posts below frost depth — 42 inches or more in the metro, set in concrete with a drainage base
  • 4x4 or 6x6 posts, 2x4 rails, cedar or treated pickets
  • Gates hung on heavy hardware with diagonal bracing so they do not sag
  • Utility locate before any digging, and a check of your city's height and setback rules

Typical cost

StylePer linear foot installed
Treated pine privacy, 6 ft$35 – $55
Cedar privacy, 6 ft$45 – $75
Cedar board-on-board or shadowbox$55 – $90
Picket, 4 ft$30 – $55

Grade changes, rock, tear-out of an old fence, and gate count move the number.

Care

Cedar left bare weathers to gray and lasts; sealed every few years it holds color. We stain new fences after they have dried out, usually the following season.

FAQ

How deep do fence posts need to be in Minnesota?

Below the frost line — generally 42 inches or more in the Twin Cities. Shallower posts heave and the fence goes crooked within a few winters.

Cedar or treated pine?

Treated pine costs less up front and holds up fine. Cedar looks better, stays straighter, and resists rot naturally. Most of our privacy fences are cedar.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Most Twin Cities cities require one, and nearly all have height and setback rules plus corner-visibility rules. We check and pull it.
