The gap between rated and real is almost entirely climate. Asphalt gets brittle below zero, then expands in July. That cycle opens the seal strip, and once wind gets under a tab, the failure spreads.
What actually shortens a Minnesota roof

- Shingles that curl at the corners or feel gritty and thin.
- Dark patches — that is asphalt showing through.
- Nail pops or shiners visible from inside the attic.
- Any sag along a ridge or between rafters.
- Repeated ice dams in the same spot.
Extending the life you have
Attic insulation and ventilation are the cheapest years you can buy. Getting the attic to a consistent cold temperature stops ice dams and stops the shingles from baking. On most Twin Cities homes that is a fraction of a roof replacement and it pays back in heating bills too.
