Concrete Work

Driveways, sidewalks, patios, garage floors, and concrete repair.

Concrete: driveways, slabs, walks and steps

Flatwork poured to handle Minnesota frost, salt, and freeze-thaw cycles — driveways, garage slabs, sidewalks, patios, steps, and aprons.

What makes concrete last here

  • Proper base: compacted class 5, thick enough that frost does not lift the slab unevenly
  • Air-entrained mix — critical in freeze-thaw climates; it is what stops surface scaling
  • Correct thickness: 4 in for walks and patios, 5 to 6 in for driveways, thicker at the apron
  • Rebar or fiber reinforcement, and control joints cut on time so cracks land where we put them
  • Curing and sealing — and no de-icing salt on new concrete through its first winter

Typical cost

WorkInstalled
Driveway replacement$9 – $16 per sq ft
Sidewalk or walkway$8 – $14 per sq ft
Garage or shed slab$8 – $14 per sq ft
Steps$400 – $1,200 per set
Tear-out and haul of old concrete$2 – $5 per sq ft

Timing

Pouring season in Minnesota runs roughly April through October. Cold-weather pours are possible with blankets and mix adjustments, but they cost more and the schedule is weather dependent.

FAQ

Why is my concrete flaking?

Usually surface scaling from de-icing salt, a mix without proper air entrainment, or water worked into the surface during finishing. Do not use salt on concrete in its first winter.

How thick should a driveway be?

Five to six inches over a compacted base for residential driveways in Minnesota, thicker where trucks turn.

How long before I can drive on it?

Foot traffic in about 24 to 48 hours, vehicles at roughly 7 days, full strength around 28 days.
