Temperature windows
This is the part people get wrong:
- Asphalt crack filler: apply above roughly 50°F, with dry pavement and no rain for 24 hours
- Concrete joint/crack sealant (self-leveling polyurethane): most products want 40°F and rising
- Seal coating asphalt: needs 50°F+ for 24 hours and full sun — typically done no later than late September/early October in the metro
- Concrete patching compounds: most stop working below 40–50°F

Before-winter checklist
- Blow out and sweep every crack — sealant will not bond to debris
- Kill grass and weeds growing in joints
- Reseal control joints in concrete
- Fix the reason water pools: downspout extensions, regrading the apron edge
- Never use de-icers containing ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate on concrete — they chemically attack it. Rock salt is hard on concrete under 1 year old; use sand for traction instead
- Mark the driveway edges before plowing season so the plow doesn't chew the apron
New concrete poured this year?
Do not apply any de-icer at all for the first winter. New concrete has not fully cured its surface resistance, and salt in year one is the most common cause of the flaking you see on driveways four years later.
