A concrete driveway does not crack because the concrete was weak. It cracks because what is underneath it moved.
The mechanism
Frost heave needs three things: freezing temperatures, frost-susceptible soil, and water. Minnesota supplies all three. Much of the metro sits on silty clay, which wicks water upward toward the freezing front. That water forms ice lenses that expand and push the slab up — often unevenly. In spring the lens melts, leaving a void, and the slab drops into it.
Up and down, repeatedly, is what breaks concrete and tips pavers.
What that looks like
- A driveway panel that sits an inch high in February and low in April
- Stair-step cracking at the garage apron
- A sidewalk section that lifts and creates a trip edge
- Pavers that undulate along one path — almost always a drainage line
- Fence posts that rise out of the ground a little more each year
Which cracks matter
Cosmetic: hairline shrinkage cracks in the first year, minor crazing on the surface, and control joint cracks that stay flush.
Structural: any crack with vertical displacement over about 1/4 inch, widening cracks, or a panel that rocks under weight. Those mean base failure, not surface failure.
Prevention is all base prep
- Drainage first. Get water away from the slab. Downspout extensions, positive grade, and no ponding along the edges. Water is the ingredient you can actually remove.
- Non-frost-susceptible base. 6-8 inches of compacted Class 5 aggregate — not native clay leveled with a rake. This is the line item cheap bids delete.
- Compaction in lifts. Plate-compacted every 3-4 inches, not once at the end.
- Correct thickness. 4 inches for walks, 5-6 inches where vehicles park or turn.
- Control joints on schedule. Roughly 2-3 times the slab thickness in feet, cut early.
- Fiber or rebar where loads justify it.
Fixing what already moved
- Settled but intact: polyurethane concrete leveling. Fast, drivable same day, and a fraction of replacement.
- Cracked with displacement or crumbling: replacement, with the base rebuilt. Lifting a slab over a bad base only buys a couple of seasons.
- Pavers: they are the forgiving option — lift, re-screed the base, relay.
The timing note
Concrete needs air and ground temperatures that let it cure. In Minnesota that practically means finishing flatwork by mid-to-late October in most years. A pour that freezes before it reaches strength is a pour you will replace.
